DVD Planning

In our print research we extensively analysed DVD cover designs to give us an idea of how we wanted to create ours.

This design for the DVD cover is a very standard one. All conventions are similar to the ones we researched and we have pick elements of the layouts from researching to come up with a rough design of how our final product will look. The 2 School 4 Cool title will be displayed at the top in the center of the DVD front cover making it clearly shown on the product to stand out and catch people's eyes. The main character will stand out and be larger in the middle of two slightly smaller characters. This is so the audience knows who the main character is. There will also be some small text below the characters to give the viewer some detail about the programme. This is done so the audience can get a feel for the product proir to watching it. On the back cover will include a blurb, images, cast names and other product information. These 4 things were chosen carefully from researched products as these seemed standard to have on. We chose to put the other information about the DVD in the bottom left corner as every single DVD cover we researched did this also. It is clear that this is a key convention to the ancillary product so to stay true to a real media product we had a layout similar.

This DVD cover has similarities and differences to the other layout we drafted. Firstly, the title is slanted in the top left corner. This was heavily influenced other DVD's we researched that had a similar style to this. The slanted title gives the product its own personality and makes it quirky in its own way. Alike our first layout draft, the main character is a shown larger than the other side characters and small text is displayed at the bottom. This is done to give a clear indication of who is the main character and to stand out, drawing peoples attention to the product. However the smaller characters are all to the left of the main one. This is because the large, bold title is displayed on the left side so it would only make sense to have the large main character on the right side. The same 4 things (images, blurb, cast names and other information) are used on this layout draft as there is on the first staying true to real media products. The other product information is still in the bottom left as we feel this very important, however the other 3 elements have been shuffled around. We feel it is to soon to tell which order the images, blurb and cast should be and we think in construction it will become clear to us on how to set it out. Colour may play a part in this too.
