Music Ideas

The song Greek Tragedy is sung by the popular Indie Rock band The Wombats. The single is a powerful and catchy anthem with dark origins according to the music video. The lyrics connote a theme of struggle which the characters may go through in the TV show. It has a dynamic sound as there elements of electro music added which gives it a sense of youthfulness and would attract our target audience of 10-18 year olds. However we chose against using this tune due to it not being fast enough in pace which means the song isn't as upbeat as we'd like. Therefore after assesing we believed it wasn't suitable for our type of children's TV show.

Next we looked at Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood who are also an Indie/Alternative Rock band. The lyrics in the song are sweet and simple and are suggestive about love. They are becoming increasingly well known for their catchy beats and poetic lyrics which they create. The song is about relationships ups and downs which means after planning what we type of music we needed we felt that this was not suitable and wouldn't fit in despite the quality of the single. We wanted a song which was upbeat and has a feel-good factor so we can attract a large audience, however this music is bleak and uninviting for a kids TV show.

We looked at lesser known song called New York Minute by the band Mobile who are unheard of by most people. The genre of the song is essentially Pop and has a catchy tune to it. The lyrics talks about real life situations and emphasises family. It has a fast beat which was we were looking for so that the opening sequence would gather some pace. This song would grab the attention of the audience from the outset as it is different and unique. However, we felt this wasn't quite suitable for us as it wouldnt fit into the opening sequence as we need a more uplifting song for a kids TV show.

Finally, we listened to 'Hit It' by American Authors who are a very well known Indie Rock band in the UK and USA. This song is familiar to many people as it featured in FIFA 14's soundtrack. We believed it had a good, catchy beat and fits our opening sequence very well. It has a fairly fast pace and emphasises a buoyant feeling. It sounds very similar to other theme music used in children's TV shows although it still has a niche element to it. It has an incredibly infectious sound with its energy and youthfulness. It represents the exuberance of being young and naive and therefore targets our audience demographic perfectly.

To ensure that we weren't using music which was licensed or held under copyright by American Authors we emailed them asking the owners if we could use the song in our opening sequence. By being able to get their permission it means we wouldn't run into any trouble in regards to using music without their consent. We were able to message the people in charge of American Authors by finding a contacts page on their website.
