Audience Research

Focus Video

Our target audience would be mainly made up of both boys and girls aged 11-13 and we decided to ask members from this primary target audience to take part in our focus group video. We asked various questions to help us decide what our opening sequence should include to be successful. We then went about using our target audiences input which included what they wanted and mentioned etc. in an attempt to make our opening sequence more appealing to the general audience.

Survey

We designed a survey in which we asked 5 questions to enhance our target audience research. We asked questions about different TV shows and which were the best and most watched by our provisional target audience of 11-13 year olds.
Here are the questions we asked below and their analysis:

Primary Audience

1. In the survey we asked ‘How often do/did you watch children’s TV shows?’ to give us an idea of how well liked or disliked children’s TV shows are. We found that they are very popular within our target audience with 41.67% saying they watched them all the time. This means that we were encouraged to remain focus to reach our target and produce a children’s TV show in line with our survey’s results.

2. We asked our participants what their favourite children’s TV show was to find out what style our target audience enjoys. We found that ‘Drake and Josh’ was our most popular answer; this suggests that our audience enjoy a TV show that involves comedy and humour with relatable characters. Other respondent’s answers included ‘Hannah Montana’ ‘Freaks and Geeks’ and ‘The suite life of Zack and Cody.

3. We also asked the audience ‘What Music genre best suits a children’s TV show?’ to aid our decision making of what type of music to use in our opening sequence. Pop was the outright winner having been chosen by 87.5% of the respondents which was to be expected as it more of a mainstream type of music, especially in the TV industry. As a result we will probably use this research and go ahead with a pop song to appeal to our audience more effectively.

4. In addition we asked our users ‘What is your favourite children’s TV channel?’ to help us choose which channel to broadcast our children’s TV show on. In the end Disney Channel was the most popular choice followed by BBC. As a result we need to ensure we take them into consideration when making our choice to go with what the audience prefers more and therefore meaning more people will watch it.

5. As seen in our product research we have taken into consideration Character Types so we took this opportunity to ask our audience what type they prefer in the survey. The three top picks were ‘Nerd’, ‘Sporty’ and ‘Popular’ as we expected.

Our children’s TV opening sequence genre type is a teen comedy-drama which means we are able to attract an audience ranging from people that are 11 to 13 years old. We are able to appeal to quite a wide range of people because our clip contains both teen-comedy and drama aspects which in turn entices people from different ends of the age spectrum. In our opening sequence we have taken an approach where we are reproducing our actual target audience into characters that are in the show, which means are audience will be able to relate to these personalities and will therefore be a very realistic representation. For example in similar TV shows such as ‘Waterloo Road’ and ‘Freaks and Geeks’ they gained popularity through manipulating characters that will attract a large audience which they are able to enjoy. These two shows were very successful and won their respected awards, case in point ‘Most Popular Television Drama’ and ‘Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series’. We have decided to follow the same direction of them as it is currently the most popular sub-genre and helps portray and create the likeness of real life school/college situations and therefore gives a sense of reality.

The main audience demographic for our children’s TV opening sequence C1, C2 with an age range of 11-13. The types of people that will ultimately be watching our program as a whole are teenagers mostly. This target audience however does not pin down a certain group of people; instead there are all types of different people that will be lured into watching our show. This is proved by the fact that the audience will contain various personalities and different ethnicities, as a result we ensure that the sequence is suitable for all. Our opening sequence promotes the idea that all the various types of people become a part of one in the form of a school.
