Magazine Cover Research

Drake and Josh (Nickelodeon)

This magazine cover displays the TV show Drake and Josh which is similar to our teen target audience.  The picture shows Drake and Josh standing up with Drake leaning on Josh with big cheesy smiles on their face. This clearly shows the genre of the show which is what we would like to interpret into our magazine. It is a 2 shot of the two boys both of which are wearing shirts and jeans showing the stereotype of a common, average kid. We would like to use this stereotype in our magazine so kids/audience can relate to it. The magazine uses many colours such as bright orange and bright yellow. This is very effective in 2 ways; firstly it catches the reader’s attention to pick up the magazine and secondly the colour scheme appeals to our child target audience. This is what we would like to apply to our target audience.

Hannah Montana (Disney)

The Hannah Montana magazine cover is a Disney TV show whose target audience is slightly lower than our audience however, the magazine cover follows similar conventions that we would like to follow. This mainly includes the layout of the magazine. Hannah Montana is positioned on the right taking up roughly two thirds of the cover. The title is on the top left hand side with article titles lined along the left. Everything is bright and in capital letters to stand out and to appeal to the target audience. The magazine includes games and quizzes for the kids to do which makes it more interactive, attracting the younger audience. However it is clear this is aimed at a female audience where as our magazine will be for both sexes so our colour scheme will differ. Having said that, the conventions in this Disney magazine, which we feel is key to a successful product.

The Inbetweeners (NME)

This NME magazine cover is featuring the TV show ‘The Inbetweeners’ which is extremely effective at representing a similar target our product. It also shows very typical stereotypes in the cover, a nerd, a dumb one, a lad and the awkward character. These are stereotypes that will be used in our magazine so following the conventions of the product. This includes the shot type, position on the cover, facial expressions and their actions. The colour scheme is red and white which brings attention to the reader whilst fitting in with the genre of the TV show. I feel this would be an effective colour scheme for our product.

Spongebob Squarepants (Nickelodeon)

This is another Nickelodeon magazine cover however this time it displays Spongebob Squarepants. Alike the other Nickelodeon magazine the target audience is a little lower than our own but the same conventions apply. The first thing we noticed about this cover is the amount of gifts and competitions advertised. This done to engage the audience so children will pick up the magazine and participate in what it has to offer. This is something that will influence our final product as we will use free gifts and competitions to entice the audience to purchase our magazine. Not only this but the text and colour scheme is typical of the show, therefore creating familiarity. Other typical conventions also appear like barcode, masthead and main image. The image is interesting and will intrigue the audience therefore this is something we aim to interpret in our magazine.
